UT Medical Center named best regional hospital in East Tennessee

The University of Tennessee Medical Center was recognized as best regional hospital in the East Tennessee region, best in the Knoxville metro area and tied as No. 2 in the state of Tennessee in the 2019-20 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” rankings for performance and patient care.

It’s the eighth year UT Medical Center was included in the report.

The adult care specialty of nephrology at the medical center received national recognition, and the hospital was considered “high performing” in seven common adult procedures and conditions including: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip replacement, knee replacement and lung cancer surgery.

In the past, the report ranked hospitals by with a numbers-driven approach, but this year, U.S. News took a deeper look at the patient-centered care and the difference in patient population at 4,500 medical centers nationwide.

UT Medical Center still came out on top.

The “Best Hospitals 2020” guidebook will be out in September, but Joe Landsman, president and CEO of UT Medical Center, says being in a magazine, as proud as he is, isn’t why the hospital has earned so many titles.

“I know our team doesn’t work this hard for the recognition,” Landsman said in a news release.

“They do so because they want to provide the best care possible for our patients and the community.”
