Tenn. jobless rate rises, remains above U.S. average
Unemployment in Tennessee edged up at the end of 2016 despite the addition of 62,100 jobs across the state over the past year.
The Tennessee Labor and Workforce Development said the state’s jobless rate rose by a tenth of a percentage point in December to 4.9 percent as the workforce continued to grow faster than the number of workers employed. Tennessee’s jobless rate remained 0.2 percent above the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.7 percent last month. Over the past year, however, Tennessee’s unemployment rate declined by 0.7 percent from 5.6 percent in December 2015 to 4.9 percent in December 2016.
