New scholarships for older students coming

Pellissippi State Community College is getting ahead of the state in offering the chance for adult students to come to school for free as early as this fall.

According to a news release, the school is offering a last-dollar scholarship, named Reconnect Now, this fall that will allow qualified students to attend for free. This is one year ahead of Gov. Bill Haslam’s plan to expand the state’s Tennessee Reconnect program geared toward adult community college students for the 2018-19 school year.

“This spring, Governor Haslam introduced his plan to expand the Tennessee Reconnect grant to give more adults the opportunity to attend college in the 2018-2019 academic year. We applaud that idea, but wanted to find a way for adult learners to get started right away,” Pellissippi State President L. Anthony Wise Jr. said in the release.

Interested students must qualify as an independent on the FAFSA form and can’t have previously earned a college degree, according to the release. Students also must enroll full time in an associate degree program and keep a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible.

According to the release, the school will offer expanded evening, weekend and online courses with the Reconnect Now program.
